The locals, on noticing the fire, immediately called the Fire Service Station and Anjuna Police who immediately rushed to the site and took stock of the situation. The fire was however doused by the employees of the foreign national as the locals started shouting at the foreigner. The fire has already damaged the huge mango trees which may not give any fruit for the next three years.
Speaking to Herald, Carl de Souza resident of Mainath Bhatti, Arpora said, “The foreigner who has been engaged in hotel business in Goa set the palm leaves and other waste on fire. The fire started spreading dangerously causing panic among us. We called up the Fire Service Station and Anjuna Police who rushed to the site but could do very little. A few foreign nationals who run businesses in Goa, have no regard for the environment and nature. They have been conducting themselves as they wish including having disregard for nature. Its we, Goans, who need to stop the destruction of nature and damage to environment for the future generation of Goa.”
The locals from Arpora have decided to take the matter up with the village panchayat of Arpora-Nagoa and other related government authorities to protect the trees and catchment areas.
