Sports Minister Ramesh Tawadkar told the House that the setting up of infrastructure for the games is one week ahead, compared to the time table.
“Holding Lusofonia Games is the biggest challenge and government has accepted this challenge. We assure that the infrastructure would be ready in advance,” he said.
Minister said that total Rs 42 crore have already been disbursed for creation of infrastructure.
He also clarified that the new facilities are built as existing stadia except couple of them cannot withstand the requirement of hosting international standard games.
Tawadkar was replying to the question tabled by Quepem MLA Chandrakant Kavlekar. He also said that the funding for the games infrastructure is through the State funds and the estimated cost as of now is Rs 218 crore.
The minister said that government has already taken up work on Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium at Fatorda, Peddem ground, Mapusa, Tilak Maidan in Vasco and few other grounds, which have facilities requiring upgradation.
As per the reply, 14 stadia or halls would be in place to host Lusofonia Games.
During the Question Hour, Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardessai raised doubts over spending Rs 46 crore for renovation of Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium at Fatorda, which was constructed way back in 1986 at a total cost of Rs 7 crore.
