CALANGUTE: Residents of Calangute have been tormented by stray dogs, as eight persons were bitten by them in the famed coastal village on Wednesday and Thursday.
On Thursday, three residents, Sandhya Shetgaonkar, Ajit Porob Paleykar and Vidhyadhar Porob Palyekar were lucky to escape with minor bites, while another resident, Narayan Porob Palyekar, was admitted in GMC in Bambolim for medical treatment. All four persons are residents of Naikka Vaddo, Calangute.
It is reliably learnt that four other persons were also bitten by another stray dog on Wednesday.
Residents have expressed alarm over the two incidents and have feared that other residents could also be bitten by stray dogs in the village.
“Stray dogs are located at every corner and it is difficult to move around freely in Calangute,” remarked a resident.
Claiming that the matter is serious, Calangute MLA Michael Lobo has promised to take up the issue in the ongoing assembly.
“With a ban on killing of animals due to protests from animal welfare activists, tackling the stray dog menace in Calangute has become a tedious affair. There are plenty of stray dogs posing a threat to villagers and tourists who frequent Calangute and Baga. The stray dog menace has to be resolved immediately or else, it will be a major problem for tourists and villagers in Calangute,” said Lobo.
“I am told that some villagers were bitten by stray dogs and this is a serious matter. I will raise it in the Assembly and will demand a solution to this problem,” Lobo added.
