A man was apprehended by police at Calangute Beach on Thursday evening after being found carrying a bag containing electronic items suspected to be stolen. HC Hemant Kotkar, while on patrol around 4:15 pm, noticed the suspect lifting a bag containing a Redmi Note 10 mobile phone and an Apple Watch worth around 50,000 rupees. The man was immediately detained.
During questioning, the suspect failed to provide a satisfactory explanation for the bag and his presence at the beach. He later identified himself as Sunil Ashtekar, a resident of Belgaum, Karnataka. The items were recovered, and the suspect, along with the complainant and the recovered goods, was handed over to the Calangute Police Station for further investigation.
The bag and its contents were subsequently returned to the rightful owner. The prompt action by the patrolling officer ensured that the stolen items were recovered quickly, preventing further loss. Authorities have confirmed that the investigation is ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
The case highlights the importance of vigilant patrolling at public places and quick police response in safeguarding residents and tourists from theft in busy beach areas like Calangute.
