PANJIM: Minister for Archaeology Dayanand Mandrekar announced the formation of a House committee under his leadership to conduct an archaeological survey of historical sites of the Kadamba regime at Old Goa in consultation with the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
Minister was replying to a question raised by BJP legislator Vishnu Surya Wagh who pointed out the need to protect and preserve historical sites of the Kadamba regime below the hilly plateau surrounding the villages of Old Goa, Bainguinim, Guunshi, Azossim , Mandur, Neura and Bhati.
The legislator also sought to know whether any steps were being initiated to preserve the Rajmarg existing during the Kadamba regime from Old Goa to Goa Velha. Wagh expressed his displeasure over government’s failure in protecting these historical sites, most of which are located underground. He said that private parties have illegally occupied these areas.
Wagh was supported by Congress legislator Pandurang Madkaikar. The Minister said that archaeological department does not have sufficient budgetary provision to spend on preservation of these structures. However, he announced to form a House committee with Wagh and Madkaikar as its members to conduct the survey and identify the need to spend renovations.
