MAPUSA: The incessant rains have made most of the Mapusa roads unmotorable due to the potholes and the presence of stray cattle.
The commuters and shopkeepers are fed up with the stray cattle as they create traffic jams by blocking the roads.
In the market area, there is usually a large herd of cattle strolling along the roads most of the time blocking the road unattended. Some of them squat in the middle of the road at prominent and busy junctions, inconveniencing the commuters as they refuse to move.
There is also cow dung on most of the roads giving a very poor opinion of the city to a first-time visitor to the town. Besides, keeping a look out for the potholes, people are also seen trying to avoid the cow dung found on the road.
Further, at night, the commuters also keep a lookout for any cattle on the road to avoid any head-on collision. A resident of Karaswada opined that the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) should look into the issue and try to work out a solution as soon as possible.
“The cattle sit on the roads at Karaswada, Ganeshpuri, market and few other spots in Mapusa, which often results in accidents. The cattle have also destroyed the plastic road dividers placed along the Mapusa-Bastora underpass.
Incidentally, last month, the MMC in its special meeting had deliberated over identifying land for parking of abandoned cars and the construction of a cattle pound at Cunchelim.
Chairperson Ryan Braganza pointed out that the land acquired at Cunchelim will be used for the construction of a cattle pound and for parking of abandoned cars and bikes. In regards to the cattle pound, they will be tying up with various “goshala”, a protective shelter for cows.
