MEA calls for dialogue as Middle East crisis deepens

India has renewed its call for restraint as tensions intensify in Iran and the wider Gulf region, stressing that dialogue and diplomacy remain the only sustainable path to prevent further escalation and civilian harm. In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs said New Delhi is “deeply concerned” about recent developments and urged all sides to avoid actions that could worsen the situation.

The ministry emphasised that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all nations must be respected and called for immediate steps to de-escalate tensions. The appeal comes amid a sharp spike in hostilities involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.

Highlighting India’s direct stakes, the MEA said Indian missions across the region are in close contact with expatriates, issuing advisories and providing assistance where required. Citizens have been asked to remain vigilant and follow local security guidance.

New Delhi also pointed to the economic risks, noting that a significant portion of India’s crude oil and LNG imports transit through the Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz. Any disruption to shipping lanes, the ministry warned, could have serious consequences for India’s energy security and trade flows.

India reiterated its firm opposition to attacks on merchant vessels and confirmed that some Indian nationals have been killed or are missing in recent incidents.
