OLD GOA: In a bid to oppose government’s plan to set up an ultra modern garbage plant at Bainguinim, the Old Goa Panchayat on Sunday decided to convene a special meet on May 26 to discuss the issue.
The decision was taken at a special gram sabha, where Sarpanch Vishal Volvoikar told the members that the panchayat is yet to receive any intimation from the State government on the issue of setting up an ultra modern garbage treatment plant.
Earlier, initiating the discussion, Siddesh Naik asked the panchayat what stand the panchayat has taken over the issue when locals have opposed Bainguinim garbage plant tooth and nail and still the government has announced its decision to set up garbage treatment plant.
Addressing the members, Sarpanch Volvoikar said: “We have opposed to set up the garbage treatment plant in our village.”
“Since we have rejected the permission asked by the CCP to construct a compound wall, the matter went to the Assistant Directorate of Panchayats, who asked to the panchayat to give the permission. The panchayat then appealed in the District Court and the matter is presently going on,” he said.
