Merces VP urged to acquire garbage site

With the Merces panchayat not finding a suitable site for garbage disposal, the Merces Vigilant Citizens Association (MVCA) proposed that the panchayat should immediately begin the process for land acquisition for the same at the site which has been earmarked in draft Regional Plan 2021.
The MVCA members also moved a resolution urging the panchayat to acquire land to build a complex which would house Panchayat Ghar, community hall, recreation centre, health centre, library, post office and other facilities for the benefit of the villagers.
After the gram sabha ended, Sarpanch Prakash Naik along with Secretary Rupesh Halarnkar and MVCA members inspected the site, where the proposed garbage treatment plant would be set up.
Speaking to Herald, Secretary Rupesh said the panchayat would now move the file along with the resolution to the BDO for his say in the matter and then the file would be moved to the Goa State Pollution Control Board for its no objection certificate.
If all goes well and if the Pollution Board grants its approval for setting up of a garbage treatment plant at the proposed site, then the garbage woes could well be a thing of the past for the Merces villagers.
Earlier, a heated discussion ensued between a villager from Vaddy-Merces and Sarpanch Prakash over an alleged illegal construction in an open space. However, the sarpanch said he could not entertain the matter at the gram sabha since the proposal was submitted after the stipulated date and the panchayat did not have the time to study it.
Sarpanch Prakash, however, expressed his willingness to discuss the issue at length in his office, at any time conducive to the villager.
