MAPUSA: The Mapusa Merchants Federation on Monday requested Mapusa MLA Joshua D’Souza and the Mapusa Municipal Council to allow them to display their goods outside their shops to increase sale.
The merchants met Mapusa MLA, MMC Chief officer Kabir Shirgalkar, MMC Chairperson Ryan Braganza and the councillors and highlighted the problems that they are facing in the municipal market.

The merchants urged to allow them to display their goods outside the shops to attract the customers. At present, since they are not allowed to display their goods outside the shop, they are losing business.
They also said that due to COVID-19 pandemic the number of people coming to the market has reduced. People fear that if they visit the market then they will get infected to the virus. Also small time vendors have started sitting at the roadside at various places in the town making goods available for people outside the market.
The merchants demanded that these vendors doing business at the roadside should be cleared immediately.
Further, they want free access into the market.
The barricades and gates that are installed at the entry and exit points of the market are causing them obstacles since vehicle that carry stock are unable to enter into the market.
They also mentioned that the gates remain locked and in case of any emergency, if ambulance or any other emergency vehicle has to enter the market, locked gates will be the obstacles.
They demanded that the pay parking around the market should be stopped and claimed that the municipal market is totally into mess and the MLA and the MMC councillors should personally inspect the ground situation.
Meanwhile, the Mapusa MLA said, “Merchants from the municipal market had come to meet me with their grievances. Their grievances are noted down and a constructive positive decision on the same will be taken after having a meeting. The vendors sitting on the roadside will be cleared and within next two days I will personally visit the market and check the ground situation.”
