MARGAO, NOV 16
Newly-elected Margao Municipal Chairperson Sushila Naik has no immediate plans to address the acute parking problem plaguing the Commercial Capital.
But, that has not stopped the new Chairperson or the Chief Officer from parking their official vehicles right at the entrance or inside the municipal garden. Even most of the newly-elected city fathers, who attended the Municipal meeting on Monday to discuss on the constitution of the statutory committees, had no hesitation in parking their vehicles inside the municipal garden.
Incidentally, the new civic chairperson has accorded top most priority to work out a permanent solution to the garbage menace facing the city.
And, the chairperson says that the parking problem would be addressed only after putting the acute garbage mess in place.
Sadly, while the city fathers have no hesitation to park their vehicle’s in the sprawling garden, neither the civic body nor the government has displayed any initiative to address the issue, notwithstanding around a dozen resolutions adopted by the Civic body over the years on the issue.
If the Municipal records is any indication, it was only during the tenure of Ganashyam Shirodkar as civic chairperson nearly 10 years ago and last year when Savio Coutinho presided over the reigns of the civic body that the an attempt was made to solve the burning problem, but in vain.
While the civic body during Shirodkar’s tenure had invited pre-qualification tenders from companies to set up a multi-storey parking lot at the old bus stand, the Municipality during Coutinho’s two-year old tenure had invited Expression of Interest to shortlist consultants to build the parking lot.
