MAPUSA: The Mapusa Municipal Council has curbed illegal activities and encroachment on the footpaths in Mapusa municipal market by allocating more resources for strict monitoring.
The MMC pledges to act against vendors encroaching the open space in the Municipal Market.
Recently, the municipality appointed two additional market inspectors to keep a strict watch over the market; besides, Chairperson Ryan Braganza and councilors Sushant Harmalkar and Franky Carvalho have also been keeping a strict watch over the market. This has curbed illegal activities and encroachment on the footpaths in Mapusa municipal market.
“The staff deputed to the market area has been warning vendors to remove unauthorized encroachments on footpaths. In this process, few illegal vendors have also been evicted. The vendors who were sitting at the main entrance of the Mapusa municipal market for the sale of lottery tickets as well as other items have been cleared,” Franky said.
The area near Shakuntala Statue, at the entrance of the Municipal Market is also free from vendors. Several spots in the market which were occupied by different types of vendors and hawkers have been cleared. Open spaces have been created for people to walk about freely in the market.
Most of the lanes near the entrance of the market have been cleared and the market is looking spacious since Thursday.
“The Friday market, which is usually frequented by several people from across Bardez looked systematic and organized this week compared to the usual congested look it wears. The MMC is adopting corrective measures to bring about discipline in the layout of the market,” Franky said.
