VASCO: In a letter to the Mormugao Deputy Collector Sachin Desai, NGO Goa First has complained that the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) has failed to follow safety norms while carrying out the renovation of the municipal building.
In its complaint letter, Goa First NGO said, “We the citizens of Mormugao taluka under the banner of “Goa First” hereby complain against Mormugao Municipal Council for not displaying signboard with permission for repairs, renovation and facelift and also for not adopting safety measures to site workers, public and private property.”

“It is been observed that the Mormugao Municipal Council has undertaken the work of renovation , repairs and facelift but there is no proper fencing near the site and also no signboard displayed which is a must for any project displaying the basic permissions such as project details, project cost, licenses from various authorities, plan approval from Mormugao Planning and Development Authority, contractor’s name/company’s name, architect name, design approval, plan/new design layout, time frame for the completion of project and name of the engineer, supervisor and responsible person”, it stated.
“The school premises situated on the MMC building’s first floor have been taken for repair and renovation. We have noticed that the school roofing has been dismantled in an unprofessional way as no safety measures have been followed by the workers as many government departments are housed under the school block such as postal department and civil supplies department and health office were small children below 5 years including infants are brought for administering various vaccines,” it added.
“There are three entrances leading to all these offices. The main entrance of MMC building is safe. However, the entrance facing the F L Gomes Road and the other for the school assembly has no barricading. There is no security guard deployed to prevent public entry as any mishap can take place due to the school block repair work. No safety measures such as safety harness used by the workers neither safety of people crossing the footpath is taken seriously, as dismantling of these huge wood blocks is a risky job and any mishap can occur, a simple seal tape is wrapped along the repair site” the letters reads.
Goa First has requested the authorities to look into the matter and direct the municipal council to adopt safety measures and seal all the entrances leading to all this three departments and further adopt safety measures till the project is ready.
Further, it has called for barricading the premises and has requested for displaying the signboard show various permissions and time frame for the project completion.
