MARGAO: The Margao Municipal Council on Wednesday resolved to permit seven day fair in the old market area of the city on the occasion of the feast of Immaculate Conception of Mother Mary on December 9.
At a special Council meeting held today, the council has resolved to regulate the fair, and levy a fee of Rs 400 per day on each of the stalls, besides garbage collection fees.
Briefing the media after the meeting, MMC Chief Officer Deepali Naik informed that the council has also resolved to fix the sopo fees to prevent unscrupulous elements overcharging the vendors.
To provide sanitation facilities during the seven day period, the chief officer informed that five mobile toilets would be stationed at different locations in during the fair to take care of sanitary requirements of the vendors and public alike.
She said the municipal market inspectors would be issued speaking orders to crack a whip against vendors violating the permission conditions. When the media pointed out that the civic body issues the order, which are not complied with by the civic officials, resulting in congestion in the old market area, the chief officer maintained that congestion near the Colva circle is a regular phenomenon, but hastened to add that the civic body would take utmost care to control the situation.
“The situation last time was much better than in the past,” she said, while informing that the carpenters would be allotted space along the old market-Ravindra Bhavan road to set up their stalls.
She threatened to confiscate the goods if the stall owners fail to remove the stalls within the time frame.
