MMC to act against traders operating without licence

MARGAO: After four years in office, the Margao Municipal Council has realised that the New Market and the Gandhi Market in Margao are plagued with illegalities.
Chairperson Dr Babita Prabhudesai informed the media that during the inspection by the chief officer, they found that many shops had not paid their trade licence. “Many have not applied for the trade license even though they were running shops for more than 15 years,” she said.
The chairperson also said that many shops had encroached on the drains by placing tiles over them. “The CO decided that the drains have to be opened and called a JCB. Some of the drains were clogged with plastic. Even the hydrant pipes have been covered with cement. The pipes meant for fire hydrants are illegally tapped and covered with cement and marble,” Prabhudesai said.
She said that they want to send a strong message to all the people who have been defaulting and not having trade license to apply for it immediately.
