VASCO: The Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) will seek assistance from former union defence minister and Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar to defreeze land behind Vasco police station, which is reportedly owned by the Defence Ministry.
According to MMC Chairman Deepak Naik, Vasco has been facing acute shortage of parking space for four-wheelers and attempts are being to increase the parking facility in the city,
While we were making attempts to see how much more parking facilities can be created in the city, a concerned citizen approached the council and informed about a prime property located right in the heart of the city but has been reportedly left abandoned by the owners due to which miscreants and anti-social elements have been misusing the property premises. When we made inquiries, it was learnt that the property is presently in possession of Defence Ministry, Naik said
We have visited the site and found the property in shabby condition, almost like a forest in the middle of the city. We also found that an old tree had collapsed on the roof of the abandoned structure. Considering city parking needs and the fact that the prime property has been left unused we have decided to seek assistance from the Chief Minister to defreeze the defence land and hand it over to the council for creating parking facility, he added.
Naik informed that he would discuss the issue with other council members in the next meeting so that the council could adopt a resolution requesting defence ministry to defreeze the land for the benefit of citizens. We will make all efforts to take possession of the property and if our plans materialises, we would seek the MLA’s help to construct another multi-storied parking facility, he said.
