MARGAO: In an attempt to expedite recovery, the Margao Municipal Council has generated revenue of more than Rs 1 crore in the month of August itself at the time when the civic body is struggling to recover arrears.

On the other hand, the MMC has already taken a decision to give training for the recovery team consisting of six members headed by Dilip Kanapurkar. The team will be going to the defaulters doors with a POS machine, to do on the spot recovery.
Chairperson Lyndon Pereira stated that he has given priority to generate revenue and recover the arrears, since he took charge of the chair.
According to the chairperson, the MMC has collected Rs 1.7 crore in the month of August itself which includes the sanitation fee. “The revenue generated in the month of August is itself a big achievement at the time crores of rupees are still to be recovered,” Lyndon said.
He further informed that the MMC has already initiated a drive to recover the arrears.
“Henceforth we will be focusing on recovering the arrears by directly visiting the commercial establishments. A team led by Kanapurkar will be trained with regard to POS machines. They will be trained how to use the POS machine,” he stated.
The chairperson said that the council has already prepared the list of defaulters from Margao and Fatorda. At the initial stages those commercial establishments having arrears of above Rs 10,000 will be targeted, and ward-wise recovery will be done.
“Each person from the recovery team will be asked to serve 200 notices per day,” he informed.
Lyndon refuted the charges by some sections of society about the civic body is doing nothing to recover the arrears.
“We are very much serious on the recovery issue,” he stated.
He informed that recently they had a meeting with the officials of the Directorate of Municipal Administration and Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA) with regard to the initiative to be taken to recover arrears by using the POS machine.
