PANJIM: Almost ten days after its normal onset, the Southwest monsoon arrived over Goa on Sunday, but on a weak note.
“Southwest monsoons have advanced over Goa on June 19 but the conditions are very weak,” Indian Meteorological Observatory (IMD) Goa director VK Mini said adding that the conditions would be favourable in the coming days.
After reaching Kerala on June 9, the absence of southwesterly winds had delayed the further advance of the monsoon. The monsoon usually breaks over Goa between June 6 and 9.
Predicting heavy showers accompanied by gusty winds in the State, IMD has asked fishermen not to venture into sea for the next 24 hours due to rough conditions. “Sea will be rough with westerly waves,” Mini said.
So far the State has received 518mm of rainfall, which is below normal.
