PANJIM: The Mumbai Press Club has accused the Sanathan Sanstha of harassing the journalists of India Today Group over the sting operation on the blast at Margao on Diwali eve in 2009.
The Club President Gurbir Sing has written to Goa Governor ‘condemning the acts of harassment and bullying let loose by the Sanathan Sanstha on journalists of the India Today Group and requests your urgent intervention.’
The Sanathan Sanstha had last week filed a police complaint against two India Today staffers at the Ponda police station for purportedly illegally filming its headquarters at Ramnathi, Ponda. Complainant Sanstha’s Managing Trustee Virendra Marathe, also took objection at filming a lady standing in the premises which was broadcast on October 10.
The club has questioned police’s act of taking cognisance of the complaint stating, “This act of filing a police complaint is nothing but an attempt to terrorize genuine journalists and prevent them from performing their duties. In a democratic country, filming and recording persons and institutions is not a crime as long as there is no breach of national security. In fact, it is shocking that the Ponda Police Station stooped to take cognizance of such a complaint.
