MARGAO: Navelim villagers on Wednesday objected to land filling on the Western bypass road passing through the village.
According to the villagers the road is being filled beyond the limit of the acquired land. The Western bypass is now renamed as Mopa Expressway.
The villagers said that the width of the road was initially planned to be at 26 meters. However, the same has now been increased to 80 meters. The villagers complained that increasing the width of the road to 80 meters would lead to demolition of eight house and acquisition of housing plots.
Now the contractor is filling the land to the entire width.
“The land losers have been paid peanuts for huge land mass; when the market price is so high people have to be paid higher compensation,” said a villager.
“We don’t want this road. This is robbery. We have stopped the trucks early in the morning and this has to stop somewhere,” said Siddharth Karapurkar.
“We elected the MLA in Navelim on the promise to stop the plunder of our land and had also later promised to get the road on stilts. But they have gone back on their promises,” said another villager.
