PANJIM: The Nationalist Congress Party has pledged to convene a joint public meeting on the mining issue at Azad maidan on February 13 and invited all political parties, including the Congress and BJP to make cause with it, in sending out a united voice on the mining issue.
“We need to put a united front before the State and Central governments that the sufferings of the mining affected people should be alleviated at the earliest. We are constantly saying that if the State and Central government put forward a united front and put a strong case before the Supreme Court, the issue will be solved faster,” NCP State President Surendra Sirsat said.
“We will be inviting leaders of all political parties to join,” Sirsat said.
When asked how they would like to define legal mining, Sirsat said that it was up to the regulatory bodies both in the state and central government and further for both the agencies of the state and the centre to decide.
“This is not a political issue. It is an issue of bread and butter of the people who have lost their jobs because of the mining shutdown. The NCP has no political stake — we have no MLA in the assembly, the Lok Sabha elections NCP spokesperson said.
The NCP has expressed confidence Pawar would help to solve the mining issue.
Pawar has already met the mining affected people and heard their grievances. The day prior to the meeting, the NCP will formally appoint their new executive committee including making Yuri Alemao the new President of the Nationalist Youth Congress, replacing Tanveer Khatib.
