PANJIM: Supreme Court on Tuesday stayed State government’s decision to cancel the admissions granted for postgraduate courses to 42 Goan students on the basis of National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) and conduct another process as per the old procedure.
The Apex Court has issued a notice to government, returnable by September 9. “Until further orders, operation of the impugned order dated 25.7.2013 passed by the Public Health Department of the Government of Goa shall remain stayed,” the order stated.
At the same time, the Court has granted permission to the petitioner to submit additional documents on the matter.
Medical students selected through the NEET for the postgraduate course at the Goa Medical College (GMC) had filed a writ petition in Supreme Court challenging government decision to cancel the permission, after apex court quashed NEET.
A three-judge Bench by a 2:1 verdict held that the Medical Council of India notification was beyond the powers of the Constitution and quashed NEET. The apex court, however, made it clear that its verdict will not affect the admissions, which have already taken place for the academic year 2013-14.
State government, while canceling the admissions, conveyed to the dean of GMC to admit the students for the postgraduate degree/diploma courses based on aggregate MBBS marks after NEET was quashed by the Supreme Court.
