PONDA: The bus stop shed at Don Khamb-Kavalem junction is in a dangerously deteriorated condition, prompting locals to demand immediate action to ensure public safety.

The old structure has developed severe cracks in the concrete beam of its roof and is further compromised by a large tree leaning on it. The locals fear the bus stop could collapse at any time, creating a safety hazard for commuters who seek shelter there.
The bus stop serves as a waiting area for residents, including students from two local schools and young children from primary and kindergarten classes. Additionally, it is used by visitors to nearby temples, including Ganapati Temple, Betal Temple and Kavalem’s famous Shantadurga Temple, making it a high-traffic area.
During heavy rains, people take shelter under the bus stop, but the structural integrity of the shed is compromised by the cracks and the leaning tree. The locals have expressed concerns that the collapsing roof and falling debris could pose serious risks to those using the bus stop.
Built in 2005, the bus stop has suffered from a lack of maintenance, resulting in the collapse of parts of its roof and a wall that has fallen on the rusty revolving gate. The presence of the leaning mango tree, with its overhanging branches, exacerbates the risk.
Residents have called on the Disaster Management team and Kavlem Panchayat to inspect the bus stop urgently and take necessary precautionary measures, including trimming the tree branches and addressing the structural issues.
