Truck cleaner dies at Verna 
MARGAO: One Babush N Fakir, 47, cleaner of truck of Bidar-Karnataka expired on December 28, after having complained of pain in the chest. According to Maina-Curtorim police the deceased had come to deliver goods at the Industrial Development Corporation, Verna, on a truck along with the driver on December 28. At around 10 am he complained of pain in his chest and was immediately rushed to the Hospicio Hospital in Margao by a 108 ambulance. Unfortunately, he was declared dead on arrival. A case of unnatural death has been registered by police who are investigating.

GKA Sahitya Bhasha Seva awards 
PANJIM: Goa Konkani Akademi has declared its Konkani Sahitya Bhasha Seva awards for the year 2014. The awardees are R Ramnath (Nisan – poetry), Sudha Karangate (Kapyallem – short story), Sandesh Prabhudessai (Talgadi – essay), Dr Rajay Pawar (Tension Free – drama), Dr Kamaladevi Kuncolienkar (Sanvsarik Tatvaginyan – research), Dinesh Manerkar (Rannvalakh – children literature), Sunetra Jog (Aajyek Vachunk Shikyale aani her kanyo – translation). Surya Ashok (Outside Goa writer for her book ‘Vishwas’ – novel). The awards consists of a cash prize, shawl, citation and memento. Yuva Chaitanya Puraskars are declared to Nityanand Naik and Suchita Narvekar, Konkani Prasar Madhyam Kala Kaushlya Award is awarded to Fausto Costa. The Lifetime Achievement Award has been given to Prakash Padgaonkar (Sahitya Pratibha), Dr Madhav Sardessai (Sahitya Pradnya), Arvind Bhatikar (Shenoi Goembab Konkani Bhasha Seva Puraskar), Dr K Mohan Pai (Madhav Manjunath Shanbhag Seva Puraskar) and Dr Vinay Surlekar (Kala Seva Puraskar) ‘Gomant Kala Association, Margao’ is awarded the Konkani Seva Saunstha Puraskar. The awards will be given at a special function on January 22 at Goa State Museum hall, Patto, Panjim, at 5.30 pm.
Condolence meet on Jan 6
PANJIM: A condolence meet has been convened on January 6, to offer condolences to Sahitya Academy award winning Konkani writer and professor of Konkani Department of Goa University Dr Madhavi Sardesai who passed away recently. The meet has been jointly convened by Konkani Bhasha Mandal, Akhil Bhartiya Konkani Parishad, Goa Konkani Academy, Asmitay Pratishthan and other organizations. It will be held in the Conference hall of Ravindra Bhavan, Margao at 5 pm. 

Progress HS annual gathering 
PANJIM: The annual social gathering of the Progress High School, Panjim was held at Institute Menezes Braganza Hall, Panjim on December 22. The chief guest was Prof  Milind Sakhardande (MTech, IIT-Mumbai) and the guest of honour was Dr Shweta Bhatikar Khandeparkar (MS Ophthalmology), both ex-students of the school. Trustee G R Sardesai, Manager Ashok Kenkre, Vice-Chairman Pradeep Joshi, Joint Secretary Ashish Verlekar and member of Ex-Student Association Paresh Shah were also present. Headmistress Shobha Mhadgut welcomed. Prizes were distributed followed by a cultural programme. Sunita Vazarkar compered while Students of the Year Tushar Biswas proposed the vote of thanks. 

Motorcycle taxi association turns 34
PANJIM: Union Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar said that the motorcycle and taxi  riders are doing their business with honesty and taking utter care of pillion riders irrespective of male or female and therefore are widely trusted in the society. He was speaking as chief guest at a function held to celebrate the 34th Foundation Day of the Goa Motorcycle-Taxi Riders Association. He advised these riders to maintain the credibility and reputation of their business and assured to resolve their grievances. Union Minister of State for Ayush and Family Welfare, Shripad Naik, Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte, President of The Goa Motorcycle-Taxi Riders Association Suresh Thakur also spoke. A souvenir and a New Year calendar was also released. Parrikar and Naik were feted and scholarships to school students distributed. Others were also felicitated. 

Delhi native held with drugs at Mandrem
PANJIM: The Anti Narcotics Cell (ANC) sleuths arrested a resident of Delhi for allegedly possessing drugs worth Rs 46,000 and cash of Rs 1.01 lakh in a raid at Pernem on Saturday. Mahent Bharat Puri, alias Baba, 56, was caught with 39.09 gms of opium and 35.60 gms of charas at Mark Villa at Mandrem. The ANC is probing whether he is involved in previous cases of drugs in the State or elsewhere and whether he is part of a bigger chain of the narcotics racket.
