PANJIM: Goa Citizens Action Forum (GCAF) apprehends that the six-month ban on fish import will affect the financials of the tourism industry.
“The tourism industry stands to face a cumulative collateral loss of Rs 70-90 crore this financial year, which can even go up to Rs 150 crore over a period of six months if the ban on fish import in Goa is strictly enforced,” joint research by the NGO and a news portal, in consultation with various tourism, shack and hotel and restaurant associations in Goa, observed.
The activists fear that the price of fish in the local markets will further increase and there is also a possibility that fish from cold storages will be sold at three times or five times the actual cost. Loss to the restaurants and hoteliers will also add to the woes, the NGO said, fearing that illegal import of fish will be a ‘new profession’.
Over the recent scuffle between FC Goa fans and Goa Police at Nehru Stadium, Goa Citizens Action Forum has urged football fans in Goa to boycott FC Goa’s next Indian Super League match in Goa.
“The organisers should give compensation to the family as well as financial compensation for the mental and physical torture they had to undergo,” Forum president Diya Shetkar told reporters.
