PANJIM: The National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) Goa unit has slammed State government for its failure to direct the colleges from waiving off the college fees for the current academic year owing to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Addressing the media persons on Friday, NSUI Goa chief Ahraz Mulla said that the colleges have taken full academic fees, including that of gymnasium, physical activities and practical, from the students, despite conducting online classes.

“Parents and students are being put under tremendous financial pressure by the colleges. The government failed to intervene and provide any relief to the student community,” Mulla said recalling that they had petitioned various authorities including Goa Governor and University Chancellor seeking waiver of the fees.
Further, NSUI alleged 833 per cent hike in fees for Post Graduate Dental course by the State government.
He said that NSUI is shocked by the “unreasonable, unjustified and arbitrary” hike in the fees for the postgraduate courses at the Goa Dental College and Hospital.
NSUI demanded that the Directorate of Health Services should immediately restore the old fee structure.
“A fee hike from Rs 12,000 per semester to Rs 1 lakh per semester which translates the yearly fees from Rs 24,000 to Rs 2 lakh per year is not just unheard of,” Mulla said.
