PONDA: After tragedy struck a Mangalore family with their three children getting drowned at Nageshi Temple lake, the issue of security of tourists visiting the temples in Ponda Taluka has come to fore. Taking note of the incident, Ponda Deputy Collector Navnath Naik, Mamlatdar Joao Fernandes and other officials visited the Nageshi Temple lake and discussed security measures with the officials.
Sources from government offices said that henceforth all temples having tollem (lake) adjacent to it or located in front of temple will need to have proper security guards or some safety measures so that such a tragedy with tourists or devotees visiting temples will not repeat.
Sources said all temples will have to consider safety and, if necessary, appoint a lifeguard or keep life saving equipment at hand.
Ponda Taluka is famous for temples and most of the famous temples at Kavlem, Ramnathi, Nageshi, Mahalaxmi Bandora, Mardol and Mangueshi have lakes near their temples.
