MARGAO: Confusion and chaos prevailed at the SGPDA wholesale fish market at Seraulim on Tuesday after the Margao Municipal Council staff along with the police attempted to clear the market from irregular sale of retail fish.
The SGPDA officials along with the police and MMC closed the gates of wholesale fish market. Even when the police and authorities did that there was retail sale of fish going on within the wholesale fish market complex. This gave rise to heated arguments between the fisherwomen and the police and SGPDA officials. The fisherwomen placing their side of story said they were selling fish on wholesale basis while SGPDA officials maintained that it is illegal to sell fish on retail.
The fisherwomen meanwhile said, “We have small boats which arrive late even at 12 noon. Moreover wholesale fish market should always remain open,” said a fisherwoman.
The surprise action of the SGPDA however caused some hardships for the customers coming to the market. They were denied entry for purchasing fish.
The SGPDA is however in no mood to back down. On Wednesday the SGPDA is going to shut the gates as early as morning 9 am and will continue crack down on the retail fish sale at the wholesale fish market.
