One gets lifer for murder

The South Goa Sessions Court on Tuesday sentenced to life imprisonment the native of Karnataka Mohamud Shadab, who was convicted and held guilty for the murder of Sanjay Thorat at Bogmalo in the year 2000.
While sentencing the accused, Additional Sessions Judge Desmond D’Costa further directed the accused to pay a fine of Rs 25,000 or in default to undergo one year rigorous imprisonment.
The Judge further directed that the fine of Rs 25,000 be paid to the wife of the deceased if recovered from the accused.
Public prosecutor, Asha Arsekar said the prosecution examined 17 witnesses, including the investigation officer, in support of its case.
While sentencing the accused, Judge Desmond D’Costa said the guilt of the accused has been determined on the basis of circumstantial evidence. “This is not a case calling for the imposition of death sentence, which is to be given only in the rarest of rare cases”, Judge D’Costa added.
Accused Mohamud was held guilty for the murder of Sanjay Thorat and for robbery after he decamped with the gold ornaments on the person of the deceased after committing the murder. The gold ornaments were later recovered at the instance of the accused.
