CALANGUTE: Barely within a month after three shacks and a hut were gutted in fire at Saunta Waddo, Calangute, another shack was gutted in a suspected arson incident at Tivai Waddo, Calangute, in the wee hours of Thursday morning.
The Rosario’s Shack, owned by Fiona D’Souza, was destroyed in the fire at about 2.30 am and Fiona’s father, Rosario, estimated the loss at Rs 25 lakh.
Rosario told Herald that his son, Savio, was asleep in the shack when he saw a bright light atop the structure and moments later, the entire roof cover was engulfed in fire.
Savio immediately shut off the power supply and alerted his workers. Savio and his workers removed the gas cylinders from the shack and tried to put off the fire with water, but it didn’t work.
One of the workers, who had climbed atop the roof to extinguish the fire, fell down and sustained minor injuries in the process.
A fire brigade rushed to the site but found it difficult to locate the shack and reach the site in time. The Calangute police team also went to the site and took stock of the situation.
Three refrigerators, including a deep freezer, Dish TV, LCD, laptop, cooking stoves, CCTV cameras, crockery, cash, furniture, soft and other drinks and woolen material, all valued at Rs 25 lakh, were destroyed in the fire.
The Rosario family also claimed to have lost important documents in the fire.
A large number of foreign nationals and locals consoled the distraught Rosario family. Calangute Police is investigating the case.
