MARGAO: Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar has assured to make functional the dysfunctional Birth and Deaths records section at the office of Salcete sub-registrar, at Margao.
Several people have been sent back by the Birth and Deaths section for nearly a week and half, due to sudden withdrawal and absence of staff at the section. None of the higher ups and secretariat level officials paid attention to dysfunctional situation of the Birth and Deaths office.
Herald is in possession of letters written by the sub-registrar to the State Registrar who in turn wrote to the various departments including Law Secretary, Joint Secretary, Director of Planning and Statistics and also to the Under Secretary (law). However, despite these efforts to get the Birth and Deaths section going, no staff was posted there and it continued to remain dysfunctional.
When asked why the government allowed the problem to fester, the chief minister informed that such a problem existed earlier too which he solved on a visit to the office. “Now I will check up with the authorities and see how we can solve it,” he said expressing surprise over the sudden removal of the staff.
In his letter dated 31/11/2016, the sub-registrar said that the Deputy Chief Minister Francis D’Souza had pushed for shifting of the office of B & D records to an independent facility, but it was not obliged to.
