MARGAO: With taps running dry and the toilet locked, fish vendors from the SGPDA market marched to the office of the PDA Member Secretary on Tuesday and demanded immediate restoration of the water and toilet services.
Led by President of Margao Fish Vendors Association, Felix Gonsalves told the PDA Member Secretary Rajesh Naik that the vendors have been facing hardships for nearly a fortnight for want of water and toilet facilities. The vendor also told Naik about their decision not to pay the maintenance fee, terming the hike as too steep.
After coming out from the meeting, Felix told Herald that the PDA Member Secretary has now promised to make arrangements for water supply to the PDA and also arrange toilet facilities. “Our women folk were greatly inconvenienced in the absence of toilet facilities for nearly a fortnight now. We questioned the PDA why the toilet and the water supply were disrupted,” he said.
When contacted, the PDA Member Secretary attributed the water scarcity to the breakdown of the water pump. “We had given the pump for repairs. But, now after four days, it has been brought to our notice that the pump is beyond repairs and need immediate replacement. Given the situation, we have invited quotations and the pump will be put in place within a day or two,” Naik added.
Replying to another question, he said he has issued instructions to Sulabh International to procure water from a tanker to meet the requirements of the toilet.
