CANACONA: Miscreants reportedly destroyed a foundation stone at Karvem-Gaodongrim, Canacona, within hours after it was unveiled to mark the birthday celebrations of Sports Minister Ramesh Tawadkar on Saturday.
According to sources, within hours of unveiling the plaque to mark the foundation stone laying ceremony of Sports Complex at Karvem-Gaondogrim, miscreants destroyed the plaque.
Incidentally, the plaque carried the names of Sports Minister Ramesh Tawadkar, Fisheries Minister Avertano Furtado, Gaondongrim Sarpanch Umesh Velip and ward Panch Puno Gaonkar, who were present on Saturday evening. Industries Minister Mahadev Naik was also present during the ceremony.
The Karvem Sports Complex is to be developed at a cost of about Rs 2 crore and is among the six other developmental projects for which foundation stones were laid at different venues that includes another sports complex at Shristhal and indoor stadium at Gaitonde Mini Sports Complex, Chaudi.
Sources informed that the incident which was reportedly noticed on Sunday morning came as a surprise, as there was no opposition from any side to the development of the same, except for the existence of another foundation stone on the other side of the ground.
Dissent was however expressed over construction of an indoor stadium at Pundalik Gaitonde Mini Sports Complex and Ravindra Bhavan at previous indoor stadium site, both at Chaudi.
Sources informed that brute and blunt force probably with an iron rod or stone crusher was used to break the plaque and its concrete stand.
When contacted, sources at Canacona Police said that there is no police complaint as yet inthe matter.
