PONDA: The Ponda Muncipal Council (PMC) has adopted a resoultion to crack down on vendors occupying extra space in the town’s fish market shed.
The resolution was adopted on Tuesday at a special meeting of the Council chaired by ChairmanVenktesh Naik.

Addressing the reporters after the meeting, Naik said, “Some fish vendors are doing ‘dadagiri’ and are using space as if the entire market is theirs.”
Naik informed that there were complaints from fish vendors as well as from the public that some fish vendors were behaving high handedly by occupying more space than allotted by the PMC. Therefore, he said, the Council adopted a resolution to take strong action against the erring fish vendors.
“Each fish vendor is alloted space of around 2×1 meters. However, some vendors are encroaching on the space of others. Such vendors not only harass other vendors, but also cause inconvenience to customers. Therefore, from now on, we will allow only five creates of fish at a time on alloted space to curb this illegaliy,” Naik said.
Reacting to the complaint against foothpath vendors by Amchi Vypari Sangatana, Naik said that the complaint by Sangatana against foothpath encroachment was false.
He alleged that members of Amchi Vypari Sangatana were not paying any tax and Rs 4.5 lakh is due from them towards sopo. “They are preventing other vendors from doing business. How we would collect revenue if footpath vendors are not allowed to do business,” he asked.
“The Amchi Vypari Sangatana is complaining against footpath vendors due to business rivalery; their matter is subjudice. We cannot clear the footpath vendors suddenly till our market complex is ready to accommodate them,” the chairman said.
“As per Street Vending Act and court direction, the PMC has to provide space for the footpath vendors,” he explained.
