PONDA: The Ponda Municipal Council (PMC) has resolved to install solar- powered CCTV cameras in its jurisdiction within a fortnight to keep vigil on crime and traffic violations.

Speaking to media persons after the council meeting, PMC Chairperson Anand Naik said, “To begin with, solar-powered CCTV cameras will be installed at two spots — Tollem-Durgabhat and Aurobindo Road behind PMC market. It has been noticed that some passerby are dumping garbage on the roads, causing nuisance.”
He informed that the pay parking system will be soon introduced in the town. “Parking spaces have already been notified. As soon as the PWD supplies signboards and the marking of parking slots is complete, the pay parking system will be implemented.”
Naik said that the PMC resolved to recruit required staff including municipal engineer, assistant municipal engineer, civil engineer, heavy vehicle driver and some clerical staff. A proposal would be sent to the Director of Municipal Administration(DMA) for approval.
He also said that PMC has recovered arrears amounting to Rs 33 lakh by issuing notices to defaulting shop owners and called upon other defaulters to clear their dues.
He said Rs 2.7 crore is due from shop owners towards rent.
Naik said that it was decided to demolish the dilapidated building comprising 16 flats at Shantinagar to pave the way for a new one.
