PANJIM: With just one lady MLA from the party in the State Assembly, Goa Mahila Congress Committee has demanded 33 percent reservation for women in the Assembly elections.
The newly-appointed GMCC President Pratima Coutinho on Wednesday took charge succeeding Sunita Vernekar. She was handed over charge by Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) President Shantaram Naik.
Addressing media persons, Coutinho demanded that women be given 33 percent reservation in the State Assembly. “Why can’t women get equal representation in the State Assembly? We need to motivate women in the political field,” she said.
Her demand got Naik’s support, who said, “Congress is committed to women reservation.”
Coutinho said she will ensure that the Mahila Congress is strengthened and works effectively raising issues concerning women. She also said that members will not hesitate to take to the street protesting the BJP led government’s anti-women policies.
The Congress leader condemned BJP Vice President Anil Hoble, who along with his wife and son, have been booked for dowry harassment.
