CURCHOREM: A South Western Railways official is reported to have assured that the Vasco-Vailankanni train will make a halt at the Curchorem rail station within a month, after residents of Curchorem-Sanvordem and neighbouring areas assembled to stage an agitation at the Curchorem rail station on Monday to press forth the demand.
Following discussions with Senior Divisional Commercial Manager (SDCM) S Vishnu Vardhan from Hubli, who was at the Curchorem Railway station, Curchorem MLA Nilesh Cabral informed the gathering that the SDCM had assured that the Vasco-Vailankanni train would make a halt at Curchorem within a month.
“I have also warned the SDCM that if they failed to comply with the assurance, then public will agitate again and sit on the railway track blocking the railway movement till their demands are met,” informed Cabral.
Besides the train halt, Cabral submitted a memorandum listing other demands to the SDCM. The other demands include regular daily fast passenger train from Vasco to Miraj to help traders, patients and passengers going to Pune, Pandharpur, etc and a direct train service to Tirupati.
Cabral also demanded parking facilities for two and four wheelers at the Curchorem Railway premises to ease congestion in civil traffic network and asked the SDCM to make a provision under railway passages suitably for small vehicles to avoid frequent closing of railway crossing gates.
Political parties including BJP and Congress also supported the agitation. Sanguem MLA Subash Phal Dessai, Curchorem-Cacora Municipal Council Chairperson Patricia Fernandes and Sanguem Municipal Council Chairperson Changuna Salgaonkar were also present at the railway station.
South Goa Collector N D Agarwal, Additional Collector Sandhya Kamat, Quepem Collector Prashant Shirodkar, Mamlatdar Manoj Korggaonkar, DySP (Railways) Lawrence D’Souza, Quepem DySP Mohan Naik, Assistant Controller of Railway Protection Force (RPF) V Jaganathan, Railway Traffic Inspector T N Rajkumar and Curchorem PI Siddhant Shirodkar were present along with additional police teams from Sanguem, Quepem, Canacona, Cuncolim, Maina-Curtorim and Colva, including Reserved Battalion and Railway Police Force (RPF), to maintain law and order in the area.
