MARGAO: Villagers of Navelim and surrounding areas have now decided to agitate in protest to the mess done due to western bypass and pollution of Salpem Lake, as a public awareness meeting in this regard will be held on December 5.
According to Antonio Alvares, the meeting has been organised at Rosary school compound, Navelim, and the issues discussed are western bypass and pollution of Salpem Lake.
“In case of bad weather or any other reason, the meeting will be held at Rosary Parish Hall,” he informed.
Adv Radharao Gracias, Elvis Gomes, social activist Sidharth Karapurkar, Architect Royla Fernandes, Sarpanchas of Navelim and Telaulim and other prominent villagers will speak on these issues.
Fr Gabriel Coutinho, parish priest and manager of Rosary College and Schools will also address the public.
Alvares, petitioner in person who has filed Public interest litigations (PILs) in the Bombay High Court at Goa will be highlighting both the issues to the public.
“The issue of the Navelim-Sinquetim road underpass, at the Zarambo junction which is built with just 3.5 metres vertical clearance instead of six metres will be discussed. The other issue is about the pollution of the Salpem Tollem field which cannot be cultivated because of the pollution from the Margao Municipal areas,” said Alvares.
He further said that the height of the underpass will affect the people from Navelim as well as the Benaulim Constituency particularly the student community studying in the Rosary College and Higher Secondary School.
Joseph Vaz, secretary of Navelim Civic and Consumer Forum will be the moderator. The meeting is called by Navelim Civic and Consumer Forum, Navelim Xetkarancho Ekvott and Navelim for Goa Forum.
