PANJIM: Almost six months after its commissioning, the state-of-the-art solid waste management plant achieved optimum capacity of treating 100 tonnes garbage per day. The company, Hindustan Waste Treatment Private Limited (HWTPL), said the plant, which was built to handle the waste of the entire North Goa coastal belt, has commenced recycling 100 tonnes of garbage daily this month.
Initially, as reported by Herald, the plant was treating around 52 tonnes per day, but with the influx of tourists, the plant is getting more garbage than expected now. “We got 120 tonnes of garbage yesterday, supplied by different village panchayats from the Northern coastal belt,” Ganesh Kandaswamy, General Manager (Design and Engineering), said.
He said the facility has generated four MW of electricity which has been used to power the plant. “Weekend rush for Diwali, which saw tourists thronging the beaches and littering, has helped the plant scale up its garbage input,” Kandaswamy said.
