MERCES: With the sluice gates damaged, the fields at Morombi-O-Grande, Merces, are flooded with saline water, thereby upsetting the plans of the farmers to cultivate the same. Now, one of the farmers, Ascenca D’Souza, has dashed off a letter to the North Goa Collector, stating that if remedial actions are not taken immediately, she would be forced to fill the field, give up farming and start some other venture.
Speaking to Herald, Ascenca’s son, Charles, informed that since the past week, saline water has entered their field which was ploughed to grow paddy crop.
“This is not the first time that saline water has entered our field and caused damage,” he added, while showing copies of several representations made to the Mamlatdar, seeking action against the Morombi-O-Grande Tenant Association, for its failure to solve the problem.
“Since our pleas have fallen on deaf ears, we have now sought the intervention of the Collector for immediate action, failing which we will fill the fields,” warned Charles, adding that they should not be held responsible later.
When apprised of the situation, Mamlatdar Vishal Kundaikar informed that the bills to repair the sluice gates have been pending since the tenure of the current committee of the association has expired. “No sooner a new committee is elected, money will be released to repair the sluice gates,” he assured.
