Seeking a bridge over a dividing line

The Salcete stretch of the Konkan Railway route literally passes through densely populated areas – right from Majorda-Utorda to Seraulim, Margao, Davorlim, Sao Jose de Areal and Sarzora. If people in these villages had lent their support to the anti-Konkan Railway agitation in the early 1990s, one reason was that the railway line would run through and divide the villages, hampering communication. The death of a former Loliem Sarpanch while crossing the railway tracks has again brought to the fore the virtual absence of flyovers and inadequate infrastructure at the railway crossings in Salcete. GUILHERME ALMEIDA reports that though the Konkan Railway Corporation has offered to build flyovers at five different locations along the line passing through Salcete, the proposal is still awaiting implementation for want of Goa government financial commitment to the projects.
