MAPUSA: Shack Owners’ Welfare Society has urged the government to make arrangements to send back stranded migrants working under them.

Society president Cruz Cardozo along with other members met Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant and urged him to make special train arrangement to send back over 2000 temporary workers.
The association had initially met the Ports Minister and Calangute MLA Michael Lobo at his Calangute office where they submitted their representation.
Cardozo informed that most workers are from West Bengal, Orissa and other States, who are stranded in Goa due to the lockdown.
He said they are burdened with providing them with accommodation and food since they have not made any profit for the current year. However, they are willing to pay for the workers’ ticket fares.
In its representation, the association also requested the government to waive off the collection of licence and other fees for shacks, sun beds including excise fees for 2020-21.
Meanwhile, hundreds of stranded workers approached Calangute MLA and asked him to make arrangements for their return back home. Most were natives of West Bengal and Odisha, who were working at shacks, restaurants and hotels in the beach belts and are now left jobless in view of COVID-19 pandemic.
