Shortage of Lady Police Sub-Inspectors hinders investigations in Salcete

MARGAO: The effectiveness of police investigations in Salcete is seriously compromised due to a shortage of Lady Police Sub-Inspectors (PSIs), particularly affecting cases of heinous crimes like rape and kidnapping involving girls.

Salcete, a large taluka in South Goa, is home to five police stations: Margao Town, Cuncolim, Colva, Fatorda, and Maina Curtorim. Unfortunately, only three of these stations have a Lady PSI stationed – Margao, Cuncolim, and Colva.

It is important to note that Maina Curtorim police station holds jurisdiction over multiple panchayat areas, while the Fatorda Police station covers several wards of the Margao Municipal Council. Due to the absence of a Lady PSI at these two police stations, all cases involving sexual abuse and kidnappings that require a Lady PSI’s expertise are redirected to Margao, Cuncolim, or Colva Police Stations, where Lady PSIs are appointed.

Even Cuncolim Police Station, which oversees 11 villages and one municipal area, has only one Lady PSI.

Given the recent increase in cases of kidnappings and sexual abuse, it is crucial that all police stations in Salcete have a Lady PSI assigned to ensure prompt justice for victims and the appropriate punishment for the guilty parties.
