PANJIM: Cacra in Tiswadi Taluka and Arambol in Pernem Taluka are among 100 coastal villages across the country selected as Climate Resilient Coastal Fishermen Villages (CRCFV) to make them economically vibrant fishing communities. Under this scheme, the State government will receive full funding from the Government of India, with an allocation of Rs 2 crore per village dedicated to the development of essential fisheries infrastructure and facilities. They have to consult people on any local project which is supposed to come up. People should know what the project is, the map, the details. In the name of climate resilience anything can come up there. Concrete structures may come up, then other development will follow. Earlier too they had proposed a marina at Nauxim, then too they did not consult the people. Cacra, Nauxim, even Taleigao and the entire belt are low lying areas. It is an estuary and a breeding ground for fish. So what is the project and they are planning to do it should be told to the people.

The paper of the Department and Climate Change says that the whole of Tiswadi taluka is a flood prone area. If Cacra and Siridao is climate resilient then why is the paper of the department saying entire Tiswadi is a flood prone? So they are in danger and they should not allow these projects. See what is happening in Bambolim, there is a massive scale of destruction. Tiswadi in danger of flooding. Does the government not have common sense, how can they say that they are resilient?

Cacra and Arambol, especially Cacra, are ecological hotspots. There are a lot of marine species there, according to studies done by the National Institute of Oceanography. They are saying it is climate resilient and talking about sea weed culture. This is done in large quantities in states such as Tamil Nadu, not in Goa. There is no seaweed in Cacra. So you will plant an invasive species and disturb the surrounding ecology. The fishing grounds will be disturbed. So what is the logic of coming up with this scheme. If the government is interested in climate resilience, it is high time the government comes up with a scheme to protect erosion.
