PANJIM: Siridao villagers fear beach parties, drugs and criminal activities if beach shacks are allowed on the beach in the village. Irked over two shacks allowed to operate on Siridao beach, villagers protested on Wednesday evening at the Tourism office in Panjim.
Speaking to the media Siridao Sarpanch Antonio Afonso said that panchayat has not given any NOC or permission for the shacks. “We have resolved that beach shacks will not be permitted on our beach and the entire village is opposing it as it will destroy the peace. We had even forwarded the objections to Tourism Dept, GSPCB and GCZMA,” Afonso said.
Local resident Seby Gracias said the villagers would not allow the shacks to operate. “If the government is forcing things against the wishes of the villagers then villagers will take the law in their own hands,” he said.
Another resident Seby Pereira said that in the past there was a murder on a shack and alleged that criminal activities will commence once shacks come.
Madhu Kunkolienkar another resident said people are opposing shacks because it will disturb the peace. “We don’t want shacks in Siridao, we want to live in peace,” Kunkolienkar said.
