PANJIM: As the investigation into over 12 cases of illegal mining, involving several high-profile persons continues, the special investigation team (SIT) has asked the Centre for the Justice M B Shah Commission’s final report on illegal mining in the State, officials said. They also said that they are scrutinizing Supreme Court order on the matter in April.
“We are studying the SC order and have also requisitioned for Shah Commission’s third report on (Goa) illegal mining. We are following all the procedures as we conduct investigation into each case,” SIT chief, Deputy Inspector General of Police K K Vyas told Herald.
The SIT is currently probing into more than 12 mining-related offences wherein some former Congress ministers, mines department officers, top bureaucrats, mining companies and a few individuals. Ex-Mines Director Arvind Lolienkar was among the few persons arrested on various charges, all of whom were bailed out later. Former chief minister Digambar Kamat was among a few others quizzed over the alleged illegalities and irregularities carried out between 2007 and 2012.
The investigation sleuths are expected to summon former minister Joaquim Alemao, politically influential mine owner Praful Hede and officials from S Kantilal company after a fresh complaint was filed against them.
“We are going through the SC order,” the officer said when questioned, adding, “If required they will be called for questioning.”
Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar had told the legislative assembly last month that the trio will be investigated by SIT for alleged illegal mining. Simultaneously, an officer from vigilance department will soon be posted in the directorate of mining to help them in the investigation.
Opposition Leader Pratapsing Rane and his MLA son Vishwajit Rane are also being probed after chairman of Dahej Minerals B Naik accused the duo of bribery to grant him mining lease in Satari. The allegation has been denied by the two Congress leaders.
