PANJIM: The Special Investigation Team (SIT), probing the mining scam, has filed a supplementary charge sheet against Kadnekar Mines before the Margao Sessions Court, on Thursday.
The charge sheet names the firm’s four directors besides Michael Smith, chairman of Terra Nova Royalty Corporation, Canada. Sources said that the Canadian company had started a firm in Goa which was operating from the office of a Chartered Accountant. It was through this firm that Kadnekar Mines — that was shut from 1983 to 2007 — was illegally operating.
The charge sheet comes a day after the SIT filed additional charge sheet against 17 accused including then chief minister Digambar Kamat in connection with the alleged illegal condonation of delay of the Kadnekar mine in Quepem.
It is learnt that taking advantage of the condonation, the Kadnekar family allegedly entered into an agreement with Magnum Minerals transferring the rights of the lease without approval of the State and Central government and allowed them to mine iron ore.
