MARGAO: Maina Curtorim Police on Tuesday arrested six persons in connection with the assault on Dicarpale youth Jason Vales.
Twelve hours after the incident, Maina Curtorim police arrested five youth from Dicarpale and the accused Avinash Gunjikar and attached 18 vehicles.
The police also registered offences against Peter Colaco, Prakash Naik, Mousin Jamkhandi, Edwin Dias and Rozario Colaco for blocking National Highway at Dicarpale and for damaging public property.  Avinash has been charged with attempt to murder.
It may be recalled that tension prevailed in Dicarpale on Monday night after a local youth Jason Vales was allegedly assaulted with a hockey stick by Avinash Gunjikar at a ross omlette gadda over an argument. The locals blocked the main road and demanded the immediate arrest of the accused.
The irate mob destroyed the vehicles of the accused including two motorcycles and two four-wheelers and also ransacked and destroyed a bar and restaurant owned by the accused’s family. The police had to resort to lathicharge to bring the situation under control.
What started as a verbal spat between Jason and Avinash escalated into a mob being lathicharged by the police at 12 am.  A police constable who was injured in the commotion was later taken to Hospicio for treatment.
The irate mob allegedly manhandled another police constable who was allegedly video filming the crowd following which the police lathicharge began.
Velim MLA Benjamin Silva visited the police station on Tuesday and demanded that the police take stern action against the accused.
“I will be following up the case and the police have assured that they will take action,” he said. Deputy Collector Ajit Panchwadkar, Deputy Superintendent of Police Dinraj Govekar, Margao PI, Maina Curtorim and Cuncolim police were present at the site to try and break the crowd.
