Executive Engineer of the Electricity Department, Kashinath Shetye, informed the Human Rights Commission that the department has submitted its response along with all legal arguments in connection with the smart meter case, which is scheduled for hearing on July 15.
During the proceedings, Shetye stated that the smart meter project is being implemented as part of a Central Government policy and therefore cannot be withdrawn or scrapped. He noted that the initiative has already been rolled out across the country as part of a nationwide programme aimed at modernising electricity distribution systems.

The department maintained that its position on the matter has been formally placed before the Commission through its detailed reply and supporting legal submissions.
The issue is expected to come up for further consideration when the matter is heard by the Human Rights Commission on July 15.
The smart meter project has generated public discussion in several regions, with concerns and objections being raised by certain consumers and groups. However, the Electricity Department has reiterated that the programme forms part of a broader national policy framework and is being implemented in accordance with government directives.
