St Inez living with stink
PANJIM, FEB 19: What’s so appalling about the St Inez area? It’s filthy and stinking nullah.
Residents of Ward VIII, especially those living along the bank of the nallah near St Inez junction, just can’t escape its stink. The nullah also remains filled with garbage and filth throughout the year.
As you enter the clutter of concrete houses on the right hand side of the road near the St Inez junction, you just can’t miss the overbearing stench emanating from the nullah.
“It’s not only just the stink but also the mosquitoes are our big problem,” says Marevva Talwar whose house is located right behind the nullah which is a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
Residents have not much hope because their own corporator Nagesh Karishetty who stays in the area though knows exactly what is the problem has not done much. Nevertheless, the residents here who are originally from Karnataka but claim to have settled down in the area some forty-fifty years ago, have no complaints against Karishetty.
The two storey building of Karishetty which is located barely 100 mts meters from the nullah, stands prominently amid the clutter of houses.
When contacted, Karishetty reasoned that letting off sewage into the nullah causes it to stink.
Water from PWD sewage treatment plant and raw sewage from sulabh toilets regularly released into the nullah, he complained
Karishetty’s neighbours admire him and consequently have no complaints against him. But there are also people who are contemptuous of him and who believe that Karishetty has wasted his five years term.
Mohan Naik, who stays near Apteshwar temple says their corporator has not done anything for them. “We are waiting for Babush Monserrate to come here seeking our votes and we will tell him what we have to tell,” says Naik who feels cheated
The candidates go to meet their voters only during elections, but forget their very existence the moment they are elected to power.
Well! Karishetty has nothing to lose since he is not contesting this time. He opted out of the Babush’s panel as his involvement in the pay parking scam came haunting him. He is being replaced by a former mayor Tony Rodrigues who is now contesting from ward VIII.
